Documentary Delves Into a Suicide and Allegations of Workplace Bullying – Faculty – The Chronicle of Higher Education

The suicide last summer of Kevin Morrissey, who was the managing editor of The Virginia Quarterly Review, has prompted a new Web documentary that explores allegations of workplace bullying. The first installment appeared online today. The documentary, called “What Really Killed Kevin Morrissey?,” was created by Beverly Peterson, an assistant professor of broadcasting at Montclair State University and an independent filmmaker.

Barely a year ago, the tragic suicide of the Virginia Quarterly Review’s Managing Editor, Kevin Morrissey, captured major media attention when his death was linked to workplace bullying. This compelling drama sheds new light on the highly charged and troubling aspects of this issue.

WORKPLACE BULLYING: Would A Law Protect Me?

Many of the victims of workplace bullying that I come in contact with are devastated by the struggle to overcome anger and feelings of powerlessness. They want to take action. They want to protect others. They want a law! Proposed legislation like the Healthy Workplace Bill (HWB) seems made to order.
Healthy Workplace Bill Anemic?

Clearly, the Workplace Bullying Institute and Dr. David Yamada have been instrumental in the mounting efforts to pass a state workplace anti-bullying bill. However, the proposed Healthy Workplace Bill as drafted by Dr. Yamada and supported by the Workplace Bullying Institute is unnecessarily restrictive as outlined in the story below.
“The Healthy Workplace Bill”

This proposed bill (see below) was drafted by the Professor David C. Yamada of Suffolk University Law School in Boston, MA, and is supported by the Workplace Bullying Institute at a web site called, The Healthy Workplace Bill. Without detracting from the fine work of Prof.
Assemblyman Mark Schroeder created a study bill that passed both houses and made it to the Governor’s desk — where it was vetoed.
